  • 10:46 AM More on Cree: Wunderlich's Theodore O'Neill suggests the company is the First Solar (FSLR) of the LED world. He notes both Cree and First Solar rely on exotic materials few others in in their respective industries use, and argues each company's competitive edge is withering as the materials typically used by rivals - polysilicon for First Solar's competitors, sapphire for Cree's - get cheaper. Meanwhile, Digitimes reports LED prices have stabilized in Q2 thanks to strong demand. (also)

  • Friday 5:25 PM U.S.-based solar companies suffered today, reversing gains made yesterday after trade duties were announced. Some think the duties could end up hurting the U.S. solar industry because they could slow the rapid price declines that have made the technology less reliant on government subsidies. FSLR -8.4%, SPWR -9.1%.

  • Friday 10:52 AM A day after American and Chinese solar stocks went in opposite directions thanks to the U.S. government's imposition of anti-dumping duties on Chinese solar imports, the entire group is trading lower (TAN -2.1%), perhaps due to investors focusing on the huge oversupply and pricing issues facing industry players regardless of location. Among the big losers: FSLR -3.5%. STP -3.8%. SPWR -5.2%. YGE -6.4%.
