RBS (RBS) Chairman Philip Hampton waives his £1.4M ($2.2M) stock bonus following public anger over the £1M in shares that CEO Stephen Hester will receive. David Cameron defended paying Hester's bonus by saying that bringing in a new team for the bailed-out bank could be even more expensive. [View news story]

EQT really doesn't qualify as a utility imho. Look at their 10-q's/k's, most of their income comes from exploration & production of natgas. That's why the stock has tanked recently.
Plot eqt vs xlu, there's virtually no relation, whereas there is for ed vs xlu, for example.
"High taxes help the richest, too" asserts Cornell economics professor Robert Frank, as the increased public spending would "produce clear gains in satisfaction for the wealthy," such as better-maintained roads. And besides, what difference does it make it if you have a home that's 15,000 square feet or one that's 10,000? [View news story]
Rather than thank Eisenhower and local government we should thank those who paid all the taxes.

It's funny to watch Warren Buffet and some of the 1%ers on tv saying how they should be paying more taxes.
I don't believe there is a law which prohibits them from paying more taxes. If they're so civic-minded they can just pull out their checkbooks any old day and send a few billion Uncle Sam's way.

You are correct that Australia is an ally of the US,but there is no way Australia can consume the massive amount of gas which is now being developed there.
This gas will be sold to China, just like Australian iron ore, copper, etc etc.
Australia is rapidly becoming an economic province of China. When a supplier has only one customer,or one customer which dominates all others, one begins to wonder who is calling the shots.
I see China buying up everything in sight,in terms of natural resources, and I worry for the future. My concern is mostly for Australia. Thankfully I won't be around long enough to see the end game.
So I do consider it a political risk for CVX and others to be investing such large amounts in Australia.

With its leverage,CHK is not on my list. But when CHK announced its cutbacks last week I bought EQT,DVN,NFG. They might not provide the snap-back potential of CHK,but they ought to be able to better withstand any continuing weakness in natgas
We just bought a house last week in Palm Desert CA.
Take a look: great houses, low prices (although they are on the rise),low property taxes. Fabulous restaurants, good shopping. Quite a few retirees so a lot of perks for us old fogies, and good health care infrastructure. If you're into golf or tennis, you couldn't find a better place.
It gets very hot in the summer, but it's a dry heat. Our a/c,pool,and appliances are all gas-fueled which is nice with the market in gas being what it is. We also plan to visit friends in cooler places during those months.
One drawback is airfares are high at PSP during the winter months,so it's necessary to drive 75 miles to ONT sometimes.
Having financed a number of gold miners in a past life,I learned that it is highly speculative. Lots of things can go wrong,in the geology, the mining, the metallurgy. The market price of gold was the least of our worries, as that is often hedged. the single most important variable was the grade of the reserves, and that's difficult to know precisely until the reserves have actually been mined and refined/smelted.
I prefer gdx instead of trying to analyze individual companies from afar.
For several years I have a sub-portfolio of gld/gdx. I maintain a 50/50 allocation. gdx is much more volatile than gld,so it provides a profitable trading situation. when gdx is down,as now,I add to it. when gdx exceeds gld i sell off the profit in gdx and put it in gld. for several years now it's worked out very well.
these are all great companies. problem is understanding the differences among them, which is beyond my ken. I take a piece in all three and balance it with iez.

GD is one of my core positions. We unfortunately live in an insecure world and there is no indication that it will be any different in my lifetime, on the contrary.
GD has proven over the years that they are able to manage their business very well during all the ups and downs of defense spending.
